Il codec G.729a è un algoritmo che permette la codifica e la decodifica di flussi audio digitiali: grazie alla sua particolare implementazione, il G.729 permette di effettuare chiamate VoIP con un consumo di banda pari a 8 kbit/s (overhead di trasmissione escluso). Senza la licenza G.729, Asterisk può utilizzare tale codec solo in modalità pass-through, ma non è possibile utilizzarlo per i servizi avanzati di Asterisk (tipo call conference, DTMF collection, registrazione chiamate). La licenza G.729 per Asterisk viene venduta per singolo canale: è possibile acquistare più licenze per ogni server, così da poter instaurare più connessioni contemporanee utilizzando il codec G.729.
